Amarnath is located in the Anantnag district of Jammu Kashmir. From Pahalgam, it takes around 28 - 30 Km to reach the destination. The temple is famous for the Amarnath Ji cave, which is situated around 5,486 meters above sea level. The Amarnath temple is surrounded by glaciers because most of the year Amarnath mountains are all covered with snow. Amarnath Temple is a cave, where devotees worship Shivalingam, which is a formation made of ice, The temple is considered to be the most holy place by Hindus. June to August is the most crowded time in Amarnath Temple.
The Amarnath cave is believed that Lord Shiva disclosed to Goddess Parvati the secret of Immortality, which is why the temple is named Amarnath it is also believed that when Lord Shiva explained to Goddess Parvati about Amar Katha, pair of pigeons secretly eavesdropped. And because of hearing the secret of immortality the pigeons become immortal and tourists sometimes can spot them in the cave.
There are two ways to reach Amarnath cave first is Batlal which is a shorter route from Chandwani Base in Pahalgam. It takes 14 Km to reach Amarnath cave although it's a shorter route than Pahalgam but because of the difficult pathways you can complete the trek in 1 to 2 days. Senior citizens and people who are unable to trek can hire Palki.
The second route is from Pahalgam, it is approximately 35 to 40 Km and it will take 3 to 5 days to reach Amarnath cave, yes, it is a longer route than Batlal but tourists prefer this route because of the easier pathways and senior citizens can walk without any difficulties, this is the better route to enjoy your trek to Amarnath cave.
Amarnath is open from the end of June and will remain open till August and it is also the best time to visit there, From June to August it is 6 degrees there so, you should bring warm clothes with you.
The Closest railway station to visit Amarnath is Jammu, which is around 178 Km away from Amarnath hence, there is no direct train to reach Amarnath, and the nearest Airport is Srinagar Airport which is around 72 Km from Amarnath Temple.
