The folk tale is famous about this temple. There was a cattleman who lived in Naila Village where the cow unlocks at midnight and goes to the shrine at midnight to offer milk since the goddess has established herself there. This bothered the cattleman and he once followed her and saw her doing all this.
Cattleman damaged the shrine with an axe out of anger. Later he got kod (necrosis disease) many people asked him what’s the reason for the disease, but he never told anyone except his son.
As a result, the disease soon spread over the entire village. One scholar of the same village had dreamt about the whole story and the remedy was to build a temple there for redemption, and Naila village people promised that the cow’s first milk and the village’s first yield would be paid to the Goddess. Due to ill behavior of village Naila towards that shrine, Naithna village never had any direct relationships with any Naila village people.
Because of its location in Naithna Village, the shrine was given the name Naithna Devi Temple. Since goddess Naithna devi is worshipped in this place in her Vaishnav avatar, no animal sacrifice is permitted on the premises of the temple; if this is done, goddess Naithna will punish the village in any form.
Shree Naithana Devi Temple is also worshiped in the form of Shakti Peeth.
