Goalpara

Goalpara is a beautiful district situated on the southern side of the Brahmaputra river in the state of Assam. The headquarters of Goalpara itself is Goalpara. This district was established in the year 1983 and occupied an area of 1,824 square km.

The name Goalpara has derived from ' Gwaltippika' meaning, Guwali village or the village of milkmen. There is a lot for tourists to see and do here. Tourists can enjoy historical and heritage sites and beautiful natural scenery here.

Although it is a plain area, there are many small hills, whose height is around 100-500 meters. The names of these hills are Panchratan, Sri Surjya, Turkeshwari, and Nalang.

Apart from the mountains, tourists can also visit many rivers here. The Brahmaputra river is prominent among these rivers, and the rest are its tributaries. Dudhnoi, Krishna, Jinjiram, and Jinri are the major tributaries. The Dudhnoi and the Krishna rise from the peaks of Meghalaya and join the Matia. After confluence, it becomes a river and is known as Mornoi. Later on, Mornoi joins the Brahmaputra. Along with the mountains and rivers, its lakes are also beautiful. The residents call these lakes by the name Beel. The prime lakes are Urapada Beel, Hasila Beel, Kumari Beel, and Dhamar Risan Beel.

Apart from lakes, many ponds have also built here. These ponds are beautiful. To promote its tourism industry, the Assam government is going to set up many wildlife sanctuaries here.

Assamese is the official language of the district and apart from Assamese other languages spoken are Bengali and Nepali.

The main attractions here are Surya Pahar, Tukeswari, Nandeshwar Devalaya, Buraburi Than, Shyamrai Satra, Dadan Hills, Hulkunda Pahar, Kumari Beel, Dekhdhowa, Barada Chibnang, Srimanta Shankara Math, Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, Pir Mazhar, and Paglartek Baba at Barbhita.
