Navaratri, also spelled Navratri or Navarathri, is a nine days famous Hindu festival, celebrated all over India. Navaratri literally means nine nights.
Navaratri is celebrated to honour the "Victory of good over evil". Ma Durga defeated the evil power Mahisasura. This auspicious days have different significance for each day. The Festival is devoted to Ma Durga, the feminine power. Celebrated by observing fasting, prayer and performing rituals.
Nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped, they are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri.
In West Bengal, Bihar and Assam, Durga Puja is celebrated in a large scale.
Every year it is celebrated in the month of Ashwin generally falls in September-October as per English Calendar. There are two seasonal Navaratri in a year. This festival in Asvwin month is called Sharadiya Navaratri.
This year it will start on 7th October and will end on 15th October.
Last day is also called Vijaya Dashami or Dussehra.
Idol of Goddess Durga is taken in a procession and immersed in River or Ponds. Effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghanada are burnt.
